Trophy Club and Westlake

Students in the area have been served by the Northwest Independent School District for more than 50 years. The district is fully accredited at all levels by the Texas Education Agency and is recognized for its academic strength and genuine concern for its students. With more than 360 classroom teachers the district is able to maintain a ratio of less than 19 students per teacher. The district oversees five elementary, three intermediate, three middle schools, a high school, two alternative schools and the Vernon Soloman Performing Arts Center.

District schools are consistently recognized for excellence from the Texas Education Agency and the Governors’ Educational Excellence Committee. Northwest High School boasts several National Merit Finalists and Semifinalists along with an Exemplary accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency. There are also numerous private schools in the area.

The communities of Trophy Club, Westlake and Roanoke enjoy an excellent reputation for the quality of life. Trophy Club has been recognized as the best place for suburban living in the D/FW area and has earned a number one rating for factors such as safety, schools, housing and environment, growth and taxes. D Magazine, a magazine that rates the best of Metroplex suburban communities each year, consistently recognizes Trophy Club for its great quality of life.

The towns are strategically located at the center of a major growth area. Residents are provided with a quality highway and road system that allows easy access to all areas of the Metroplex. In addition, the close proximity to both the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Alliance Airport has played a major role in the town’s growth and has helped attract jobs.

The Solana Business Park -- built in the mid 1980s - is a blend of office, retail, restaurant and hotel space and is home to numerous major corporations including Mercedes Benz Credit Corporation, Verizon Wireless, IBM, Citicorp Technology, Levi-Strauss National Communications Center and other well-known international businesses as well as smaller local businesses.

When its time to play, Grapevine Lake is just minutes away. The lake features 146 miles of shoreline and has become the premier windsurfing, sailing and fishing area in North Texas. The 7,380 acre area includes an extensive park system with public tennis courts, baseball and softball diamonds, football and soccer fields, jogging and biking trails, a swimming pool, playgrounds and picnic facilities.

The area boasts a wide array of colorful, native flora including crepe myrtle, azaleas, red bud flowering peach, Indian Hawthorn, Savannah holly and cherry laurel. A number of clear running creeks and several lakes are located in the area along with a variety of wildlife. The area is also flourishing with greenery spread throughout the heavily wooded terrain and gently rolling hills.

Trophy Club Country Club features 36 holes of golf available on a private course (which features the only course ever designed by the legendary Ben Hogan), several lighted tennis courts, a community swimming pool and a very active youth sports league.

There are numerous community parks in the area, many with facilities such as tennis courts and pools. Harmony Park features 13 acres of neatly trimmed playing fields and wide-open spaces that brighten up the town and antique street lamps and unique civic art add character to the area.

The area was first settled in 1847 by Charles and Matilda Medlin and 20 other families. They first established themselves along Denton Creek but were forced to move to higher ground due to the constant flooding of the creek.

Dallas lawyer Glen Turner -- who purchased an estimated 2,000 acres along Highway 114 -- founded circle T Ranch in 1956. The revitalization of the area quickly followed and dozens of other ranches and homeowners began to settle in the area adopting the name Westlake. At the time, Westlake included the land north of Denton Creek. Soon after, the northern part of Westlake was annexed from the town to form Trophy Club. In 1952, Denton Creek was dammed and Lake Grapevine was formed.

By the early 1970s, the idea for building a golf course and country club and residential area in the northern part of town was presented by Houston developers Johnson and Loggins and professional golfer Ben Hogan. In 1985, the area was developed and incorporated as the town of Trophy Club.

Trophy Club began in 1973 when Houston developers Johnson and Loggins approached the Council of Westlake on the possibility of constructing a housing development around a posh country club. The town name came from the original plan that the Country Club would house the trophy collection of golfing legend Ben Hogan.
